Today is the day. Our first full length record Is Mayonnaise an Instrument? is out now.
As I was pacing around this morning ruing the fact that I now have to shamelessly self-promote these ten babies of mine I was thinking about their origins. Today is essentially the culmination of something like 22 years of dreaming about making music. It started when my Uncle Ross gave me a stereo and some Nirvana and Pearl Jam CDs for my first communion. I listened to those CDs incessantly. “Come As You Are” was the first time I ever really got that feeling listening to music, where I felt really connected to a piece of art in an indescribable way.
There were a few other big milestones along the way, like raiding my parents’ CD collection and discovering “Suzy Q,” “Under My Thumb,” and “Hey Jude.” Hearing “Down By The River” on a road trip made me realize long and slow songs can be really cool, but at the age of 10 I didn’t really know what Neil meant when he said he shot her. My friend’s mom used to play OK Computer when driving us to lacrosse practice, but it wasn’t until I started falling asleep to Kid A and Amnesiac in high school that the Radiohead connection really hit. I would always be startled awake by “You and Whose Army?” in the best way possible.
Another pivotal moment was stumbling upon My Morning Jacket via a bonus song on Pearl Jam’s Immagine in Cornice DVD. Eddie Vedder joined MMJ for a cover of the Who’s “A Quick One While He’s Away” and I was blown away by the energy of the performance. The next 5 or so years were dominated by MMJ, culminating in seeing them over a dozen times between the ages of 17 and 19.
The release of Radiohead’s The King of Limbs Live From the Basement was another pivotal moment. I still remember where I was sitting in the library the first time I heard “Bloom.” That recording probably has had more of an influence on Marjorine than anything else. It was also at a time when I was discovering electronic music through Four Tet and Aphex Twin and expanding my understanding of how rock music can integrate new and interesting soundscapes. You can hear that all over our Mattress 4 U EP.
Around this time I was in a band called Pool Table Debby with Dave, but we were all going to college in different places. It was frustrating not being able to constantly work on music together. Then Lonerism came out and like many others I was struck with the “IT’S JUST ONE GUY” realization. I started collecting recording equipment, and songs on the record like “Rotarians 45,” “Venen,” and “Dirty Mirror” were written as a result.
From there it’s more straightforward. I caught the Gizz bug in 2015 and 25+ shows later I’m still hooked. You can hear them all over this record, and subsequent ones we are currently working on as well. Desert Daze has been a massive influence as well, helping me understand the power of the music community and that I’m not the only weirdo out there who is this obsessed.
Anyways, that’s all for now. You’ve heard enough about my musical journey. And since you’ve made it this far how about you get something for free? Here are some Bandcamp codes for the new album. You can redeem them via the link HERE.
